Turn Out The Lights

#ad
Matador Records #ad - The album appeared on year-end lists everywhere from NPR Music to New York Magazine’s Vulture. Julien baker’s solo debut, Sprained Ankle, was one of the most widely hailed works of 2015. The album, centered entirely around baker’s voice, guitar, intimate document of staggering experiences and grace, was a bleak yet hopeful, recorded by an 18-yearold and her friend in only a few days, and unblinking honesty.

Strings and woodwinds now shade the corners of her compositions, and Baker takes to piano rather than guitar on several tracks, pushing the 21-yearold Baker’s work to cinematic heights of intensity. From its opening moments — when her chiming, evocative melody is accompanied by swells of strings — Turn Out the Lights throws open the doors to the world without sacrificing the intimacy that has become a hallmark of her songs.

Turn Out The Lights #ad - This evolution from ‘sprained ankle’s intentionally spare production allows Baker — who is still the album’s sole producer and writer — greater scope and freedom. Shrink-wrapped. The album was recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in her hometown of Memphis, and mixed by Craig Silvey The National, TN, Arcade Fire.

. With turn out the lights, baker returns to a much bigger stage, but with the same core of breathtaking vulnerability and resilience.

Sprained Ankle

6131 Records #ad - For years, baker and a group of close friends have performed as the band Forrister formerly The Star Killers, but when college took her four hours away, her need to continue creating found an outlet through solo work. The tracks from this session were circulated among Baker's friends, meeting high praise and lots of encouragement for the songs to see a proper release.

. There's something wonderfully hypnotizing about Baker gently confessing her soul with such tremendous honesty. At the prompting of a friend, Baker ventured to Richmond, Virginia to record a number of her new songs at Spacebomb Studios. The intent was never to make these songs her main focus, yet the process proved to be startlingly cathartic.

Soon, and plans were made to release her debut full length, she found a home on 6131 Records' increasingly diverse roster, Sprained Ankle. To call sprained ankle a happy accident would be misleading as to the nature of these poignant, emotive songs. Thankfully, now the world will be able to share in her passion and sorrow Shrink-wrapped.

Sprained Ankle #ad - Yet no one, least of all baker, could have predicted she'd be releasing an album, especially as a solo artist. As each song came into shape, it became more apparent that Baker had genuinely deep, surprisingly dark stories to tell from her thus far short life she turns 20 this Fall. Tales of her experiences are staggering, the results are gut wrenching and heartfelt, and when set to her haunting guitar playing, relatable yet very personal.

Lush

#ad
Matador Records #ad - Throughout lush, acute sense of pacing, and razor-sharp writing cut through the chaos and messiness of growing up: the passing trends, the awkward house parties, Jordan’s clear and powerful voice, the sick-to-your-stomach crushes and the heart wrenching breakups. Pitchfork “rarely can we witness the creative progression unfold from prodigious potential to fully realized vision so quickly” - NPR Shrink-wrapped.

Shrink-wrapped. Is there any better feeling than coming clean?” sings the eighteen-year-old guitarist and songwriter halfway through the sprawling anthem that is “Pristine, ” the album’s first single. It’s a hook that immediately sticks in your head—and a question she seems to be grappling with throughout the record’s 10-songs of crystalline guitar pop.

Recorded with producer jake aron and engineer Johnny Schenke, Lush sounds cinematic, with contributions from touring bandmates drummer Ray Brown and bassist Alex Bass as well, yet still perfectly homemade. Lindsey jordan is on the brink of something huge, and she’s only just graduated high school. Her voice rises and falls with electricity throughout Lush, her debut album as Snail Mail, spinning with bold excitement and new beginnings at every turn.

Lush #ad - Shrink-wrapped. In the time that’s elapsed since habit, toured the country, her 2016 ep, opened for the likes of girlpool and Waxahatchee as well as selling out her own headline shows, Jordan has graduated high school, and participated in a round-table discussion for The New York Times about women in punk -- giving her time to reflect and refine her songwriting process by using tempered pacings and alternate tunings to create a jawdropping debut both thoughtful and cathartic.

The artist i’m most excited for in 2018” -jon caramanica, nytimes “Songs that combat the acute smallness of suburban youth, filling in empty space with punk-inflected guitar and imagining vantages from which everything feels bigger and more beautiful”.

7

#ad
Sub Pop Records #ad - In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. In a more general sense, we are interested by the human mind's and nature’s tendency to create forces equal and opposite to those present. Shrink-wrapped. Looking back, there is quite a bit of chaos in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over.

7 is our 7th full-length record. For 7, we built a "home" studio, and began all of the songs there. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about, in the process shortening the amount of time between the original idea and the finished song of the album’s 11 songs, 8 were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, we would go to a “proper” recording studio and finish recording them there, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles.

7 #ad - As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it must be for most artists these days. Shrink-wrapped. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look, so 7 feels like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or “semi-first.

Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest level of spirituality, as in "Seventh Heaven.

Historian

#ad
Matador Records #ad - The sound they created, with substantial input from multi-instrumentalist and live guitarist Jacob Blizard, living, is far richer and fuller than the debut — an outward flowering of dynamic, breathing rock and roll. Shrink-wrapped. It finds her unafraid to take on the big questions — the life-or-death reckonings, and the ones that just feel that way.

. Dacus’ remarkable sense of melody and composition are the driving force throughout, giving Historian the immersive feel of an album made by an artist in full command of her powers. It starts out dark and ends hopeful, darkest, place and then breaks, but it gets darker in between; it goes to the deepest, ” she explains.

Historian #ad - Shrink-wrapped. The past year, with its electoral disasters and other assorted heartbreaks, has been a rough one for many of us, Dacus included. What i’m trying to say throughout the album is that hope survives, even in the face of the worst stuff. Shrink-wrapped. Two years after her 2016 debut, no burden, won her unanimous acclaim as one of rock’s most promising new voices, Dacus returns on March 2 with Historian, a remarkably assured 10-track statement of intent.

Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. Lucy dacus is done thinking small.

Lotta Sea Lice

#ad
Matador Records #ad - I guess it wasn’t till i had another tour booked for the following summer in Australia that we thought we should record as much as we can, no major goal to make it a full length but it came together that way because the vibe was so strong. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. Kurt vile: we ran into each other on the road in various continents and talked about the recordings.

Courtney barnett: now we finished the album, we dreamt up an amazing band which we’ve called THE SEA LICE inspired by a Stella Mozgawa beach-side-story and me n Kurt will be standing there out front with our guitars singing songs together. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. Harmonies and guitarmonies galore.

Lotta Sea Lice #ad - Lotta sea lice is the result of 8 days in the studio spread over almost 15 months when Courtney and Kurt’s respective touring schedules allowed for them to be in the same place at the same time. Songs from this album we did, a handful of our own songs from previous albums, maybe some old folk songs n what not.

I love working with Courtney, the collaboration was laid back with less pressure. Shrink-wrapped. Very collaborative. Shrink-wrapped.

Out In The Storm

#ad
Merge Records #ad - Shrink-wrapped. Out in the storm, katie crutchfield’s fourth album as Waxahatchee and her second release with Merge, is the blazing result of a woman reawakened. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. It’s a lot of beating around the bush, and superficially trying to see my life clearly, but just barely scratching the surface.

Ivy tripp doesn’t really have any resolution. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. Her most autobiographical and honest album to date, Out in the Storm is a self-reflective anchor in the story of both her songwriting and her life. As crutchfield prepared for the release of her Merge debut Ivy Tripp, she found herself depleted emotionally and professionally amidst the dissolution of a noxious relationship.

Out In The Storm #ad - Shrink-wrapped. And sonic Youth. Out in the storm digs into what I was going through without blinking. Shrink-wrapped. Agnello and crutchfield worked together for most of december 2016, and Ashley Arnwine on drums; Katie Harkin, touring guitarist with Sleater-Kinney, Katherine Simonetti on bass, along with the band: sister Allison Crutchfield on keyboards and percussion, also contributed lead guitar.

Shrink-wrapped. It’s a very honest record about a time in which I was not honest with myself.

Capacity

#ad
Saddle Creek Records #ad - Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. I think masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside. Shrink-wrapped. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable.

Shrink-wrapped. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. Shrink-wrapped. After last year’s stunning masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the first time in the studio and were recorded the same day.

Capacity #ad - There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album, ” Lenker explains. Shrink-wrapped. Shrink-wrapped. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.
